Letters to You Interactive Sculpture

Letters to You is mailbox house that houses my letters and invites people passing to take and read my letters and write a response back.

The sculpture’s outside has laser etchings of my favorite words. It also has a component outside to hold pens and paper so people don’t have to search for them.

Inside my letters, I have the same favorite words scattered around in the sentences I wrote about my conflicted feelings about the pressure of Fine Arts. This invites people to reply back to me their opinions about fine arts and my letters.

Tools: Illustrator, Laser Cutter, Rhino3D, CNC Routing

Role: Artist, Designer, Builder

Duration: 1 Week

Initial Concept Sketches

The construction involved designing and figuring out the math of constructing a miniature house with two levels, and how to etch words on there. I figured out the math by hand and designed the box in Illustrator, and CNC route it, then laser cut the words, and then constructed it in the wood shop.

I installed the sculpture out in the public on grass, and I received more than 20 letters back to me. Some of the letters recieved was very self-reflecting, and others analyzed how I was feeling from their point of view. My art professor also wrote a letter to me, and it helped me resolve some of the internal feelings I had wrote about fine art.
